"Night Rain At Portland Head Light"
"Night Rain At Portland Head Light"
This scene captures a heavy surf crashing against tidal rocks as the oldest and most famous lighthouse in the country shines it's warning light into the Atlantic. I made the sketches and took photographs one October afternoon between rain squalls. Second in the Portland Series.

"Union Station, Portland, Maine, Remembered" circa 1936
A glowing night scene with businessmen arriving after a long day's work and shoppers returning from Boston. All are greeted to fresh falling snow at Portland's Union Station. Portlanders still fondly remember this landmark which was dismantled in 1963. Some research went into this scene. I used a 1920's Reo for the bus, an early 1930's Ford for the smaller taxi and I turned my Grandmother's 1936 Pontiac into the far left taxi. First in the Portland Series.

"Coastal Garden"
As I travelled near the Portland Yacht Club, I found fields of lupine in full bloom. There, near the edge of one of the fields, a grouping of white Adirondack chairs were placed overlooking Casco Bay. A scene waiting to be painted, and I did.

"Flower Market at Monument Square"
This is one of the longest, continuous open air markets in New England. Originally a farmers market for the most part, now flowers are the main attraction that bring shoppers and those who just come to enjoy the display. Wednesday is the day to see the market. The studies and sketches I made were accomplished from across busy Congress Street so I could include the original buildings seen behind the market. Don't forget to bring popcorn or peanuts for the pigeons. Fourth in the Portland Series.

"Dawn's Symphony"
This scene was inspired by the view I see from my home on Lake Annabessacook. It's early morning and as the sun filters through the trees, a pair of Canada Geese glide into the shadows. I paint a number of watercolor and oils from my deck overlooking the water. Some will be made into print form.

"Winter Birch"
This stand of white birch is between fields where a trickle of a brook runs through. It's on a few acres I have in Northern Maine. The land was a working farm at one time but with disuse, brush and soft wood saplings are creeping along field edges. This little spot has always been a favorite of mine and so perhaps others might also see the beauty of this place.

"Evening Chores" circa 1950
These barns are part of a long past dairy farm. It's on a road which loops off Route 2 and then back again a few miles along. It's almost as though when travelling this road, one returns to a simpler time when gasoline was 19 cents a gallon and coffee was 5 cents for a cup. I once had the 1950 Chevy pick-up that's in this picture. My daughter named it Reddy Jughead.

"Winter Fields"
I was traveling along winding country roads one late winter's afternoon. As the sun was setting off to the right, these barns caught the last rays of the sun. I was able to quickly work up a good sketch with color notes there and bring "Winter Fields" to life later in the studio. The ending to a great day of painting.
